Computer Networks & Networking
A computer network is the means of connecting a series of computers together so that they can share data or services such the Internet or printers.
We can set up, manage, and maintain computer networks in the UK. A network can consist of two or more computers and can be set up in one of two ways:
- Workgroups
- Domains
it all starts with a domain
Workgroups
A workgroup is normally used for a small collection of no more than 10 computers networked together without any central access point. Users log into their own computer and security is managed at that computer. A workgroup is acceptable for home users or small companies that do not worry about security or the use of mission critical applications.
Domains
A Domain is the networking of computers through a central location called a server. Each computer needs to be set up within the domain and when a user logs onto a computer they gain access to the network's data, applications, and devices.
A domain provides for much tighter security, the ability to centrally maintain each networked computer and to provide permissions to files and folders.
